TERMINOLOGY - DESCRIPTORS

BEFORE YOU BEGIN....

1.  Consider different terms (descriptors) that may lead you to the information you need, such as:

  • Animal Rights
  • Animals and Humans
  • Animals as property
  • Zoos or zoo animals
  • Aquarium animals
  • Circus animals
  • Sea Parks
  • Wildlife Parks
  • Animal Welfare
  • Animal Populations
  • Captive wild animals
  • Cruelty to animals
  • Animal Reproduction
  • Animal Behavior
  • Animal Domestication
  • Species Intervention
  • Zoological gardens
  • Animal breeding
  • Animal rescue

These terms should be used when searching for books, periodicals, databases and Internet sites.  They may also be used to search within resources (such as in the book's index or contents).

2. Try searching for animals as a subject.  Then look within the resource for specific sub-topics (such as those listed above).

3. Use Boolean searching (two or more terms at once) with the operator: and

Example:  Animals (subject)
                   and
                   Property

This can be done in Power Search of Destiny (our library catalog) or in Advanced Search in any of the databases.
