STEP ONE - DESCRIPTORS

For example, if my topic had to do with cars, I could use the following terms to look up information:

  • Cars
  • Autos
  • Automobiles
  • Vehicles
  • Henry Ford
  • Transportation

and many more.

Try to find as many keywords, events, dates, persons, places as you can that are associated with your topic.  Also, make sure you have the correct spelling.

Here is a helpful organizer you can use to get started:

STEP TWO - FINDING RESOURCES

Begin to look for print and online resources.

1. Use the terms you just found in Step One.

2. Use the tab called RESOURCES, for instructions and recommendations.

3. When you find a source that you know you can use, be sure to write down the information about that item, so that you can find it later if you need it; and so that you can cite it as well.

4. Use the prepared organizers to help you keep track of the resources you find:

  • Books - Gold
  • Print periodicals - Pink
  • Computer Sources - Yellow

STEP THREE - GATHERING INFORMATION

Now, you are finding excellent resources, so you can begin taking information from them, as follows:

1. Open up this new document for note-taking.

2. Go to File > Make a copy

3. Rename it as Founding Fathers Research Project  - your name.

4. Type the information you want to use for your report in the notes area.  Be sure to indicate where you found that information.

 Generally the process involves:

  • editing it
  • writing the final copy.

STEP FIVE - CITING YOUR SOURCES

It is time to make a list of the resources you used for your project.

You may use the working bibliography organizers you filled in earlier for each resource.

  • Books - Gold
